For all the rage which fans have with depth, star power is what is able to catapult teams to championships. You can have all the depth in the world, but if you don’t have players who can lift you when the going gets tough, it then becomes unlikely for a team to win titles.

In the NBA, this is evident with the Boston Celtics, as their lack of starpower (sorry Isaiah Thomas) has hindered their title hopes. In the PBA, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters have been victims to this before when Paul Lee would be out with an injury.

Thankfully for the San Miguel Beermen, they have two stars who can bring them up when the going gets tough.

San Miguel leaned on Junemar Fajardo and Alex Cabagnot to beat the TNT Katropa in a non-bearing game for the Beermen. Win or lose, SMB would have gone to the playoffs with the #1 seed anyway, so going all out wasn’t a necessity for them.

Instead, they actually did go all out against TNT, even at times looking like the team that was in dire need of a win. Junemar Fajardo muscled his way to a seemingly typical 20-22 game (while smiling for about 90% of the game), leading the SMB comeback during the 4th quarter.

And by the end of it all, it was the Crunchman himself who finished the job off, bringing out the arrows to shoot the Beermen a victory #10.

You can say all of the jokes regarding the SMB’s poor use of depth. But you can’t deny the fact that their stars get the job done when the going gets tough.
