Tacloban teen who lost everything to typhoon dares ‘Rise’ to Nike challenge

Jonas Panerio,

CEBU CITY – In talking about the program of Nike’s first-ever reality documentary basketball program called ‘Rise,’ its head coach Chot Reyes likened the nationwide search to looking for “diamonds in the rough.”

In Cebu, he may just have uncovered two gems, each one worthy of ascension to the program’s final 24 – point guard Jair Borne Marabe, 17, and 19-year old two-guard Jude Luke Bulan.

The two were part of the 167-strong contingent that trooped to the Cebu City Sports Institute on Saturday to take part in the Cebu tryouts, the third leg of the search for players worthy of being taken to the House of Rise and gifted with top-notch training from some of the best mentors in the country led by Reyes and his assistant coach, PBA great Jimmy Alapag.

Marabe, a well-built and athletic guard, stood out early on as he took on the various drills put forth by Rise’s battery of assistants with both aggression and precision. But soon learned that there was more to the aspirant’s story than meets the eye. Read more!

One-on-one: Trillo on Meralco’s 2015 season and building for the future

Levi Verora Jr., Tiebreaker Times

The Meralco Bolts have been one of the most impressive teams in the 2015 PBA season. With coach Norman Black taking the helm, the Bolts transformed into a middle-tier team that was able to pull off surprises and challenge heavyweights all-season long.

With a core that does not have much promise compared to the league powerhouses, Black was able to handle a a squad and make them play together at a high level, even though in reality he only had a few tools, a handful of over-the-hill players/pushovers, and a few offensive weapons.

The Bolts eventually dethroned the Purefoods Star Hotshots in the Philippine Cup quarter-finals, made the semi-finals of the Commissioner’s Cup, and pushed San Miguel to the hilt before losing in two games in the Governors’ Cup quarter-finals despite finishing with only the 7th seed.

Meralco compiled an overall record of 21-21, keeping themselves in the middle of the pack compared to a dismal 14-22 record in the 2014 season.

Tiebreaker Times spoke with Bolts assistant coach Luigi Trillo to talk about the Bolts’ season in review and how he sees the team in the future. Read more!

For Old Time’s Sake: Over 35 All Star Team

Sajjatam “TK” Kulsomboon

I always enjoy the Rookie vs. Sophmore Games (or whatever format it is these days) during All-Star Weekend. It may be a chaotic mess of teenagers running around having fun, but it is a fun display of the power of youth and their capabilities.

But what if we had a team composed of the complete opposite? What if instead of grouping the best of the youngest of our stars in the league, we put together a team of the eldest sages who are still doing their thing?

We always love to look at the players of today and ponder on what they might look like tomorrow. This time for a change, let’s take a look at the players of yesterday and reflect on what they are doing now. Read more!
