UP Fighting Maroons def. UE Red Warriors 94-81
Juan Gomez de Liano, UP (15 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists)
Juan GDL continues to be superb this season. He was in his bag today, making the right plays while adding some flash to his substance. In my book, he’s the MVP of the Fighting Maroons.
Bright Akhuetie, UP (28 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals)
He had a pretty slow start, but Akhuetie was able to figure things out quickly enough to help the cause of the Fighting Maroons. An aggressive Akhuetie spells good things for the Fighting Maroons.
Diego Dario, UP (13 points, 3/4 3FG)
Nope, he isn’t a bust. What’s for sure, however, is how he was able to provide quite the spark for the Fighting Maroons in the fourth quarter that essentially decided the game for them.
Alvin Pasaol, UE (30 points, 9 rebounds)
Sigh. We feel you, Alvin. We feel you.
- Things were looking dire for the Fighting Maroons before halftime, but they eventually pulled things together come the 2nd half. They trusted their bread and butter: the Juan GDL ball screen action, and it led to some great stuff for the Fighting Maroons.
- The easy way out is to say this was *just* UE, but this was a win UP needed either way. Every win matters at this point for this group, especially with a Final Four race that’s looking this tight.
- We’re running out of things to say about UE at this point. Trust the process, they’re doing the right things, nice action is being run, they just aren’t winning games. Losing sucks. It really does.
