Alaska and Star will forever be linked because of how Coach Tim Cone coached the Star Hotshots after his legendary stint with the Aces. The two have had a rivalry over the past years, engaging in some memorable tiffs with each other.
This time around, not only is Tim Cone not coaching any of the two teams, but some familiar faces such as James Yap are nowhere to be found. That didn’t mean that Star and Alaska didn’t have a memorable game against each other.
The two squads engaged in another classic, with the Aces coming out of top against the Hotshots in overtime. It was a game of runs, with both teams exchanging run after run. It was as if the basketball gods really meant for this game to go into overtime, as neither team could pull away from each other.
It was two teams throwing punches, exchaging rounds with each other. Lo and behold, it was the team with the Brash Brothers who came out on top, as Calvin Abueva and Vic Manuel led the Aces to victory.
Abueva was the one crowned player of the game, putting up 23 points along with 9 boards. But Manuel certainly deserved recognition as well, putting up 25 points and 8 rebounds to help the cause of Alaska. Their efforts were enough to lead Alaska against a pesky Star team which leaned on their bench to keep things close.
The win tightens the race for playoff seeding even more, as the Aces and the Star Hotshots now find themselves with identical 3-3 records. The Hotshots have fallen off after notching three straight wins previously, losing their past two assignments while Alaska is trying to find some stability after a shaky start to their conference. With a race for seeding this tight, every single game for both teams will matter in the long run.
