The Alaska Aces are gunning for their 2nd win this season against the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters. Their last game was against the Grand Slam team, the aptly renamed Purefoods Star Hotshots (they couldn’t have made it ANY clearer that they were the Grand Slam last season right?). It ended with a win, which for the Aces that’s an important W in the column (for the Purefoods STAR HOTSHOTS though, we know it doesn’t mean as much). Calvin Abueva led the way, off the bench, scoring 21 points on just 13 shots.
The Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters, on the other hand, are coming off a solid win against the NLEX Road Warriors (or the North Luzon Expressway Road Warriors). Jay Washington and Kelly Williams led the way for the Texters with 19 and 18 points, respectively (both on 13 shots).
The Aces’ schedule is well spaced, with contender teams sandwiched between really winnable games. A key thing to watch here is the three point shot for the Texters. No surprises there since the Texters lived and died by the three over the past few seasons. What’s interesting is that Alaska’s defensive system, an extreme version of pack-the-paint mentality, will have a hard time against the Texters’ bombs away mentality on 3-point shots.
It’s also worth mentioning Vic Manuel. Last season, Vic Manuel came into his own with the Aces, registering a PER of 20+ in both the Commissioner’s Cup and the Governor’s Cup. He had a pretty solid opening day line (11 points on 7 shots, 9 rebounds, 0 turnovers) and I wouldn’t be surprised if he continues to be a rock for the Aces this season.
I think Alaska will have their hands full against their philosophical nemesis. I wouldn’t be surprised if they lose this big.
