The last two undefeated teams are set to square off in what should be an epic battle between the San Miguel Beermen and Alaska Aces. Both with similar 3-0 records but their journey getting there has largely been different. For Alaska, the biggest story has been their 41-point massacre of the Meralco Bolts. For San Miguel, it’s been about braving several comebacks by their opponents after building early, solid leads. Hopefully, the Beermen will be the ones to come out on top in convincing fashion.
No official word yet but Doug Kramer and Rico Maierhofer are not expected to suit up for this game with lingering injuries. That will be a huge blow as they will once again rely on a young tandem of David Semerad and Justin Chua.
It’s always an interesting match-up at the center spot for these two teams as June Mar Fajardo will be thoroughly tested by the guile, experience, and footwork of Sonny Thoss on both ends of the floor. Unlike the last game, he’ll need a strong start in this one to help his squad. Of course, the other frontcourt position will be a battle as well with Alaska’s combo of Calvin Abueva and Vic Manuel. They are the type of forwards who have repeatedly torched the Beermen’s frontline; aggressive, gritty, terrors on the glass and in the paint. It will be up to Arwind Santos, who’s looking more and more like his 2011 self, to keep them in check. They will also have to look out for Alaska’s full court press, something that will be an issue for a San Miguel team that has been struggling to break it when employed against them.
This will probably be the biggest test so far for Coach Leo Austria and his wards as they face a team with a (mostly) complete lineup that is on a huge roll. I’m confident they will have what it takes to grind out a W but it will no doubt be a hard one.
