After dismantling the Blackwater Elite, the Purefoods Star Hotshots (3-0) will now face another win-less team (tough luck), the NLEX Road Warriors (0-2). The Hotshots, after winning their first three games of the conference with Marqus Blakely, is looking to solidify its core even more with the addition of NBA-veteran, Daniel Orton.
Daniel Orton will have a lot of work to do as Marqus Blakely steered Purefoods as the 2nd best team in the league in terms of offense (108.1) and 3rd in terms of defense (91.3). It will be a tougher one for him as he’ll be facing another NBA-veteran in his first game in the PBA in Al Thornton. Thornton’s been producing solid numbers for the Road Warriors so far. He’s currently averaging 33.5 points (eFG 51.1%), 12.5 rebounds, and 1 block. Unfortunately, these numbers didn’t produce wins for the Road Warriors although they were so close to getting their first W in their last game, only losing by a solitary point to the Alaska Aces.
Aside from the NBA veterans going at each other in this game, another thing to look forward to are the local match-ups. Of course, Purefoods’ bigs lead by Marc Pingris will have their hands full against Asi Taulava. The battle of the “stretch fours” in Joe Devance and Aldrech Ramos will also be fun to watch. As for the guard match-up, James Yap and PJ Simon will have to handle the duo of Mac Cardona and KG Canaleta.
NLEX is coming into this game hungry for their first win this conference. Because of this, Purefoods will be in great danger of losing their first if they play without a sense of urgency. Possibly one thing that would work against them would be the adjustment with Daniel Orton. It will be expected that the first quarter will be a tight one. But hopefully, Orton can adjust quickly. If this happens, it would mean trouble for the Road Warriors. It’s because once Purefoods get their rhythm and their game going, they are a very difficult team to stop.
