The Star Hotshots (1-0) survived a late barrage of three-pointers from the NLEX Road Warriors to nail their first win of the conference. And just two days after, they’ll be facing the best three-point shooting team (12.5/32.5 3PG – 38.5 percent) in the conference (so far) in GlobalPort Batang Pier (2-0).
The Hotshots are in for a tough game as they’ll be facing the best team early in this conference. The Batang Pier are currently 2nd in terms of offense (105.0 ORTG) and 1st in defense (81.5 DRTG) which explains their unblemished record of 2 and 0. They are led by no less than Terrence Romeo who is 2nd in the league in terms of scoring (locals), averaging 23.5 PPG. Aside from Romeo, the Hotshots must not forget about Stanley Pringle (who just returned from an injury in their last game) who fired 18 points in his return. Aside from these prolific locals, the Batang Pier also have two reinforcements to rely on in Omar Krayem and Patrick O’Bryant.
Without a doubt, they are facing an offensive machine in GlobalPort. What the Hotshots need to do in this game is to be consistent with their defense. In their first game, the Hotshots had their moments on defense but they just couldn’t sustain it for the entire duration of the game. Marc Pingris should be able to lead by example on the defensive end as well as spitfire guards Mark Barroca and Alex Mallari; whose primary task is to contain the two-headed attack of Romeo and Pringle.
In terms of offense, Marqus Blakely is expected to shoulder the load once more. It will be interesting to see how the so called “Big 3” of the Star Hotshots will perform in this game after a very disappointing conference opener. After being called out by Coach Tim Cone, can James Yap, PJ Simon, and Marc Pingris bounce back and deliver this time around? If they can, it will be an exciting match for sure. If they can’t, they will have a very hard time and could possible go on and get their first loss of the conference.
