View from the Enemy: Adamson Soaring Falcons
The Adamson Soaring Falcons are coming from a tough loss against the DLSU Green Archers after a controversial call that sealed their fate. The Falcons have yet to post back-to-back wins this season, sporting a W-L-W-L-W-L pattern. Judging by the sequence, ADU has come strong after losing the previous game and will be a tough opponent for the Far Eastern University Tamaraws.
The FEU Tamaraws are sitting atop of the team standings with 6-0 record, and will now face the sole team standing on their way to a first round sweep. The FEU team has been scorching hot with the new offense placed by Coach Nash Racela. Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia particularly are having a spectacular year with the Dribble Drive motion and will look to continue their dominance against the Falcons.
So who will it be? Adamson has yet to lose back to back this season, while FEU has just plainly yet to lose. One of these teams will end the first round on a sour note and both teams will fight to the death making sure it won’t be them.
Keys to the game
Force the Turnovers
The Adamson Soaring Falcons have been the worst taking care of the ball this season averaging 17.8 turnovers per game. This will be to the delight of the Tamaraws which averages a league-best 17.2 turnover points per game. They must force the Falcons to turn the ball over and capitalize on their mistakes.
Play solid defense
ADU has shot lower than 40% in two out of their three losses (shot above 40% vs. DLSU). The Tamaraws must force ADU to shoot long jumpers and contested three point attempts since the ADU team has been below average shooting from the perimeter. The Falcons are better inside, averaging a third-best 32.3 points per game in the paint. The Tamaraws must make an effort to contest layups and not allow any easy shots. They should send players to the line (where ADU has shot a league worst 55%) instead of giving up open drives to the lane.
Big three plays well
It will be up to the trio of Garcia, Romeo and Tolomia to lead their team to victory. They must attack the basket strong while also being able to set their teammates up. They’ve been spectacular throughout the year and their supporting cast hasn’t failed them either.
I think it will be a first round sweep for the FEU Tamaraws. The ADU Falcons are a very strong team with very talented players including stars like Jericho Cruz, Ingrid Sewa and talented role players like Roider Cabrera and Don Trollano. I just feel like they’ve been a little inconsistent so far and still have to work out playing at the same level every game. The FEU Tamaraws are much more established as a team, have solid veteran leadership and experience and they execute their system very well. I think it will be 7-0 for the FEU Tamaraws but anything can happen in the UAAP and an ADU win outcome has a very decent chance.
