The DLSU Green Archers made a strong impression in their opening game, winning against the defending champions NU Bulldogs, 67-63. Up next for them will be against the UP Fighting Maroons, fresh of an impressive victory over rebuilding UE Red Warriors. La Salle’s first game had a more Final Four atmosphere, as they held off a team who is billed as a contender this season, and are the reigning champions. UP on the other hand, won over a UE team who is expected to struggle after losing almost all their key players from last season. It will be a chance for the guys in green to continue their hot start to the season. (Quick Fact: The last time DLSU won its opening game not against UP, was in 2005). For the Fighting Maroons, it will be a chance for them to prove that their team should be taken seriously with a win over the Green Archers.
Last season, DLSU easily won their match up versus UP two games to none. In the first round, DLSU raced off to a 26-9 1st quarter and never looked back as they easily won 74-53, behind Jeron Teng‘s 25 points in only 21 minutes of action. The Green Archers shut down the Fighting Maroons to a lowly 25.6 eFG% while shooting at a good 49.2 eFG% themselves. Their second round match up wasn’t any different from their first round encounter, with DLSU defeating UP again easily, with a 86-65 victory. La Salle once again had a good 53.8 eFG% and having a high 105.6 ORTG for the game. In the 2 games they played, La Salle averaged around 50 eFG% while limiting UP’s eFG% in the 30s. The Green Archers averaged a whopping 96 ORTG, while UP had only 71 ORTG.
Both squads are off to a good start, but for a lot of people, the Green Archers are expected once again to be one of the title contenders. For UP, people just expect them to improve from last season (well they are just a win away from doubling last season’s total victories, actually make that their total victory from the last two seasons, with 13 games left on their schedule). Can we expect a closer battle between these two teams this year? Maybe UP can pull off a shocker? Or are we going to see The Green Archers having UP’s number again this year?
