Barangay Ginebra is off to a good start with a solid win against the Talk N’ Text Tropang Texters in the season opener (101-81) and clobbered the Pacquiao-less (not it that matters) Kia Sorento (87-55).
In both games, athletic big man Japeth Aguilar led the way for the Kings. Aguilar pounded the mighty Talk N’ Text with 18 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks. The 6-foot-9 forward then took charge against a smaller Kia Sorento lineup, finishing with 16 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. These dominating performances earned him the first Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the 40th season.
Their next match is against PBA newcomer NLEX Road Warriors (1-2) who got soundly beaten by TNT in their last game. This should be an easy game for Ginebra, especially if the team stays aggressive on the defensive end and Japeth Aguilar continues his stellar play. Their defense held both TNT and KIA to just 34% and 26% field goal percentage respectively. The Kings is also averaging 9 blocks per game.
It is also interesting to note that Ginebra is running a smoother triangle offense under Coach Jeff Cariaso, evidently shown by their 22 assist per game average. They are able to open the passing lanes and find easier shots to take.
