Barangay Ginebra will be up against the San Mig Coffee Mixers for their next assignment and it’s not your usual Manila Clasico as Coach Jeff Cariaso will finally face his mentor Coach Tim Cone. Analysts and fans alike are curious to see how Cariaso will perform in this game. With Ginebra now playing under the triangle system, we can say that the Mixers have the upper hand in this one. Will Ginebra be able to overcome a tough and resilient San Mig squad and remain perfect this conference?

Keys to the Game

Stop the Scoring Apostle

If there’s one guy who’s been the X-factor for San Mig Coffee this conference, that guy has to be PJ Simon. Simon had 17 and 22 against Barako Bull and Meralco respectively. In their last game the Mixers were up against Globalport, they were down 17 points when they entered the 2nd half, but ended the game with 10 point lead with the main catalyst to the furious comeback  none other than PJ Simon who had 24 points (10-out-of-20) in his 3rd straight double digit scoring game. Ginebra will need to stop Simon if they want to have a better chance of winning this one.

Bombs Away!

The Kings have shot an impressive 38.0% (16-out-of-42) from behind the arc this conference. San Mig will most probably clog the paint in an effort to prevent Greg Slaughter and Zaccheus Mason from wrecking havoc inside and the Kings will be needing their reliable marksmen in this game in order to counter the Mixers’ defense. Once they have shown that they can hit from the outside, it will force the SMC defense to extend and open up the paint.

Walking Mismatch

In Ginebra’s three wins this conference, Japeth Aguilar has never been a factor. Playing with limited minutes, Japeth has only averaged 7.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, a far cry from his almost double-double average in the Philippine Cup.

It’s the true that Barangay Ginebra hasn’t lost this conference and they’ve won each game in double-digit deficits. But that’s simply because Z-Mason and Slaughter have been playing so well in those three games (GBP and Meralco are in the bottom of the standings right now).

Now they will be playing against a tough San Mig Coffee squad who’s having a share of stellar performance. This will be a perfect time for Japeth Aguilar to come out of that slump and help Ginebra win this much needed game.

Key Match-Up

Mark Caguioa vs James Yap

Another classic showdown. Photo Credit: (Spin.ph)

No Manila Clasico is complete without classic showdown between Caguioa and Yap who are both recognized as the respective superstars of their teams. Interestingly, The Spark is known to have bad games whenever he plays against San Mig Coffee Mixers. How he plays and his output would be a big factor for Ginebra to pull off this “upset”.
