The Alaska Aces are still owning an immaculate 5-0 record about a month into the conference. It’s a refreshing start, especially considering they’ve played some pretty good teams (TNT and SMB). Purefoods is struggling through injury and rest but you have to take Alaska’s start seriously at this point. I mean, they ARE the best offense and the best defense in the league so far.

They’re doing it with solid execution and through rebounding. They dominated the battle on the boards on 4 of their 5 games (except for the Junemar led Beermen). With Blackwater among the shortest and weakest rebounding teams in the league, expect Abueva (25/28/26 rebounding split) and Manuel (8/23/15.5 split) leading the way. Both are also in fact leading the league in PER with 33.1 and 32.6, respectively. Those two have been a huge reason why the Aces have played as well as they have, not to mention the sweet shooting veteran Dondon Hontiveros (40 percent from deep).

On the other hand, Blackwater has found themselves in .. black water (hehehe). They have yet to win a game this season. That’s what happens when you depend on a mix of small role players and rookies/unknowns. Impressive though is the fact that they’re an above average defense. Their last game was against the Globalport Batang Pier, where the Batang Piers torched them to an 8 of 17 night from beyond the arc. This is going to be a LOOONG conference (and probably season) for the Blackwater Elites. Tonight won’t be any different.

A big giant W and a giant #6 on the column for the Aces probably coming up.
