There was one major expectation from team captain Tony dela Cruz: to be the on-court team leader. Aside from that, he was also expected to be a solid part of Alaska’s defense. As one of the more veteran players, he is now playing a supporting role to his newer teammates.
Tony dela Cruz provides maturity as the on-court leader of the Alaska Aces. He’s a smart and credible player coach on the floor who can really knock down those mid-range jump shots. In the 2013 Commissioner’s Cup, he served as a reliable reliever for Cyrus Baguio and Dondon Hontiveros.
Aside from the triple he buried in Game 4 of the semi-finals series against SMC, he can pretty much only shoot mid-range jumpers. In the last conference, he was a liability in defense and had some difficulty guarding younger players. He also didn’t show much aggressiveness and barely put up any layups.
As a veteran player who averaged 18.68 minutes in the conference, he had a responsibility to contribute to Alaska’s defense and hit the occasional three-pointer/layup. He definitely needs to improve and add variety to his shooting in order to be able to keep up.
