Crowd favorite Barangay Ginebra was overwhelmed by the top ranked Alaska Aces at the Smart Araneta Coliseum yesterday night, 87-70.With Ginebra being known for their “never say die” attitude, it was important for Alaska to avoid relaxing. They definitely had that mindset as they started the game strong with a 14-0 run.Alaska’s excellent defense held Barangay Ginebra down, allowing them to score only six points – probably the lowest first quarter output in the PBA, ever. Their defense was accompanied by hot shooting from RJ Jazul and JVee Casio, which spelled trouble for Ginebra. The Aces held a comfortable lead at the half.

In the third quarter, the Aces didn’t allow Ginebra to get their hopes up as they went on an 8-0 run. This gave them a solid 30 point lead, further boosting their confidence.

In the last three  minutes, Ginebra had a glimmer of hope as they were able to close the scoring gap. They were down by only 11 points, suddenly making a win possible for the Barangay. Dozier came to the Aces’ rescue by scoring four points, widening the lead to 14 with only about a minute to go.

This game was a preview of how badly Alaska wants to win the championship. Will Barangay Ginebra step up in the next game?

Game 2 will be tomorrow, 7:30pm at the MOA arena.
